Hydrogen has received considerable attention in the last years as a sustaintable energy resource due to its non-polluting and high energy density. The production of hydrogen through fermentation offers a great potential as an alternative process in the future. However, the knowledge of the process is still a challenge and studies on process modeling and optimization, in silico, can help in this task. The aim of this work was to perform a study of optimum control of the fed-batch process of hydrogen production by Cyanothece sp. ATCC 51142 in order to maximize the amount of hydrogen generated during the entire process. The results demonstrate that different schemes of feeding can improve hydrogen production, leading to significant values when compared with data reported in the literature.

Keywords: hydrogen production, optimum control, fed-batch process.
